This is a poker book review for a book written in 2004. T.J. Cloutier and Tom McEvoy supply the reader with a great amount of their experience. T.J. Cloutier’s writing style is somewhat crass and surly, but that’s just the way T.J. Cloutier is.
There is a great section in the poker book regarding weak aces and how to play pocket pairs in and out of position. The shortcomings for this book is that it is somewhat geared to a tighter style of poker. However, having said that, the book gives you some of the knowledge that has made T.J. Cloutier a super Hold’em Tournament Player and one of the leading money cashing players in the WSOP.
Some of you may recognize Tom McEvoy as a seasoned online poker pro from PokerStars. However, he is most noted for winning the World Series of Poker Main Event in 1983. Even though it’s been a while since the book was written and McEvoy won the main event, this is a great book for beginning players and can be applied today’s game. New players can learn winning strategies for poker tournaments and then open up their game later.
I played with a guy in an underground casino in New York who read this book from cover to cover and then actually played heads up against T.J. and beat Cloutier for a bracelet in the WSOP. With all poker books there are a few things that you can take from each book and apply it to your game, this is one of those books where you can definitely learn something. This book helped my game and will help yours too. I recommend this book for new players.
